Joanne Ball – Burgess (B.A., M.Ed), a born and raised Bermudian and a resident of Nairobi, Kenya is best known in Bermuda for her best-selling published work, “The Lizard & The Rock: A Tale of Bermuda’s Discovery” as well as the sequel, “The Priceless Hog Penny.”
In Kenya, Joanne is better known by her stage name Judge Jo-1. She is a multitalented dancer, choreographer, singer, songwriter, author, educator, yogini & television personality. The magic of Jo-1 has spread like wildfire in the East African region, Bermuda & beyond. Jo-1’s passion & prowess have earned her the distinction of the voice of the voiceless as an outspoken defender of Dancers Rights.
Joanne will discuss for the first time ever in front of a public audience the experience of being in the middle of a terrorist attack. This poetic presentation will also address her relocation with her family to Kenya and reflect on parallels and similarities between Bermudian and African cultures.
Joanne is also hoping to open up discussion surrounding practical steps that Bermuda could take to ensure that talented, educated, Bermudians have the space and opportunity to use their skills at home or for the benefit of Bermuda while living overseas.
